A fatal railway accident in the southern state of Oaxaca has resulted in the deaths of at least 13 people, an incident sure to fuel critical opposition regarding the rapidity and handling of the country's flagship public works projects.
The disaster occurred on the Interoceanic Train, a rail link built to link the Atlantic and Pacific Ocean across the slenderest section of the Isthmus of Tehuantepec. This project was created to establish an different freight railway path to the Panama Canal, with the goal of spurring commercial progress in the area.
“We shall rigorously clarify the cause of this incident,” affirmed the national leader.
The president announced that, of the approximately 250 people on board, another 98 were hurt, with five of those in serious condition. The leader added plans to visit Oaxaca to confer with those affected.
Key Undertaking of Past Leadership
The Interoceanic Train was a central infrastructure project of the former leader, whose time in office finished the prior year. This venture was a hallmark of his leadership's developmental goals for the southeastern region.
Another ambitious train initiative from that period, a tourist and cargo loop around the Yucatán Peninsula, was also integral to the wider plan to kickstart the economic fortunes of a comparatively poorer part of the country.
Project Execution and Safety Concerns
The building of both railway systems was overseen by the armed forces, marking a notable increase of its responsibilities in civilian infrastructure. They were completed at an rapid speed, beating forecasts to be at least partly opened before the end of that government.
However, this fast-paced schedule had also fueled significant questions over operational security.
- Sunday's derailment was the third such incident on the Interoceanic Train in the current year.
- This includes an previous accident this month when a train smashed into a truck at a level crossing.
- The other major rail project has also had a couple of non-deadly derailments.
Appeals for Audit and Pause
In the aftermath of the tragedy, the head of a primary political opposition urged an urgent pause in the construction and operation of all such projects.
This stoppage was proposed while awaiting a full technical review. The party stated that the loss of life "calls for prompt explanations."
In response, the national leader insisted that the train had been operating in total adherence to all security protocols. Assurances were given that the government would continue to be "accountable" in both the development and running of these national initiatives.
