New research indicates that individuals who discontinue blockbuster slimming jabs like semaglutide or tirzepatide tend to recover reduced body mass at a significantly accelerated pace than those who halt conventional diet and exercise programs.
Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight individuals often shed about a fifth of their body weight while using the jabs, the weight comes back at an average rate of nearly a kilo each month after stopping.
"Users using such drugs must be informed of the potential of quick weight regain when the treatment concludes," warns expert Dr. Susan Jebb.
Such speed of recovery suggests a return to pre-treatment mass within about a year and a half.
Weighing Therapies
The analysis, which looked at dozens of trials involving thousands of participants, compared the results of these new drugs with other pills.
The team point out that people who lose weight through dieting generally see a slower creep back—around 100 grams monthly—once they finish.
Explaining the Quick Rebound
Nutrition scientists suggest the mode of action of the drugs is key to understanding the accelerated weight return.
These medications imitate a body's own chemical called GLP-1, which controls appetite.
"Long-term administration of GLP-1 concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the body to generate a reduced amount of its endogenous hormone, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," said Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.
"Withdrawal of this medication means appetite is uncontrolled, making excessive eating a significant risk."
A Lifelong Disease?
Medical guidelines advise the jabs for people with obesity-related medical conditions, alongside prescribed lifestyle changes.
Many experts say that, given the high risk of weight regain, the therapy should be considered ongoing.
This view is echoed by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the results "highlight the persistent character of excess weight," akin to managing conditions like diabetes.
Patient Accounts
Individuals who have discontinued the medication explain a powerful return of hunger.
"I experienced a switch flipping and I was suddenly ravenous," recalled a patient.
This challenge is exacerbated if individuals have not adopted permanent lifestyle or habit changes during therapy.
Growing Adoption
Figures suggest that millions of adults in the UK have used weight-loss jabs in the last 12 months, with desire being substantial.
- Adoption is more common among females than men.
- The 40s and 50s age group shows the highest level of interest.
- A large proportion access the medications through private healthcare rather than public health services.
In conclusion, experts emphasize that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a magic solution and lasting health benefits relies on ongoing behavioural management.
